Los Angeles- The wave of Self-Immolations by Tibetans continues. On July 14th, 2017, a young third-year Tibetan student, living in exile and studying at Central University for Tibetan Studies, in Varanasi, India, self-immolated by burning himself alive with kerosene. Per eyewitness accounts and footage caught on CCTV, he was engulfed in flames as he ran shouting “Victory for Tibet” in front of a residential hall, during an event attended by the President of the Central Tibetan Administration. He succumbed to severe burn injuries covering 90 percent of his body and passed away a week later on July 22, 2017, at Delhi’s Safdarjung hospital. His last words to his mother were, to not grieve for him since he did it for the “freedom of six million Tibetans” and “for Tibet.” He had been concerned about the deterioration of Tibetan language under repressive policies in Tibet by the People’s Republic of China. This marks the 159th self-immolation, with 150 Tibetans who have self-immolated by fire inside Tibet since 2009, protesting for “Tibetan Freedom” and “Return of the Dalai Lama to Tibet.”(more)
